Another view. I found a small Kodak camera in the tall grasses while walking around the church taking pictures. I tried to identify the owner by looking at his pictures but he had no shots hinting to his identity or location. I'm sure this is a popular feature for tourist who are fortunate enough to locate it.

This small church is East of Ruidoso Downs, New Mexico. I drove by the structure many years without noticing it. This summer while on a jeep trip through the mountain backroads with high school classmates and our spouses I noticed it as we exited a dirt road onto N.M Highway 70. I returned later to take pictures. This church is charming from every angle.

I've photographed windmills on most of my travels and spent several weeks in the Texas Hill Country taking pictures from every angle. This one has much more color than I was able to reproduce. Every blade is different in angle and color. I vow never to paint another every time I finish one.

I traveled through Questa many times without noticing this church. Returning from a Red River skiing trip I noticed the twin bell towers and single cross appearing above the trees. After some searching I found an entrance. The church is much larger than most of the rural adobe structures and very photographic with its design and unique facade. It is worth a visit for anyone interested in the New Mexico landscape and churches. This painting image is being used by church supporters to raise funds for renovation. I do hope they are able to meet their renovation goals.

This little church sits along the upper Rio Grand river in Pilar, New Mexico. This adobe church was built in the late 1800's and has a unique front with the wood louvered belfry and unusual entry. It's not visible from the highway but soon comes into view just off the road toward the river. I photographed the structure from outside the gate as I felt uneasy about entering the compound area. We had a very relaxing and beautiful evening camping nearby on the Rio Grand.

This small church is in the Mora, New Mexico area and constructed in the 1830's. I was especially interested in the thick walls that can be seen through the windows. The buttresses and angled rear wall are also interesting features often found on the small rural churches. These features provide the artist with more interest and options than clean perpendicular features.

This Church is located in Golden, New Mexico on the back road between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. I have driven by it many times and frequently find it to have changed colors after repairs to the adobe exterior. Access is limited as I am sure the many inquisitive tourist and artists can be an intrusive problem. The uneven walls and various room shapes make the architecture very artistic and uniquely pleasing to most people. I would like to attend a service there.

I passed by this courthouse many times as a young man and recently had to make special trip just to photograph it for a painting as the thought of photographing it earlier never crossed my mind. Fortunately I had remembered what a beautiful courthouse it was and what a good painting subject it could be.

This little adobe church sits at the bottom of Fresnal Canyon in La Luz, New Mexico. I passed by it many times while working as a Social Worker in Alamogordo, many years ago. I finally got around to painting it recently and after retiring from Social Work.

On the West side of Cloudcroft there is a dirt road just West of the tunnel that becomes Fresnal Canyon road and goes down to La Luz. I set up art materials on the pickup tailgate and painted this adobe home. Fortunately my dog never saw the Cayote observing us from the rocks just below.

I passed by this truck many times on the way to Cloudcroft, N.M.
It still sits across the road from a rural flower farm between
Mayhill and Cloudcroft. The truck logo, although rusted, clearly shows
the truck to have belonged to L.E. Lester, Arteisa, New Mexico.
Perhaps he did deliveries for the nursery or had some ownership?

This small Church is on the High Road to Taos between Espanola and Taos, New Mexico. It appears to be on private land as does many small New Mexico Churches. To avoid encroachment and offending anyone I make use of my telephoto lens where possible. This often results in muddy shoes, burrs, various stickers and in one case torn britches.

My wife and I worked the ticket booth and lift lines one winter at Taos Ski Valley. We passed this Church in Arroyo Seco on the way up and back from the ski area. It was a real adventure for retirees. We ski most winters and enjoyed all the skiing we could endure that winter. Good snow, cold winter and the RV holding tanks froze up once. I knew this Church was in Questa, but had been unable to locate it until one day after a ski trip at Red River I caught a glimpse of a Church on my way through Questa. After some turns I located it from the back and was able to get several good photos. It was much larger than I had expected. I have several different views to paint and will be doing a much larger painting eventually.

I was up early to photograph severel Taos churches in the morning shadows. It was one of those cold, late winter Taos mornings. A quick stop at " The Bean" for a good wake up cup of coffee to go and I was off on my adventure through winding dirt roads and unique adobe architecture. Many of these churches are not well known, but their adobe and wood architecture is interesting. It was fun looking for them and Ranchitos, although close to town, appeared very rural when located. Shadows were good and I was able to get several good pics for later painting. I remebered to get my wife Brenda a hot cup of coffee on my way back to the motel and we were ready for a full day of desert mountain adventures.
